Implant Supported Crowns/Prosthesis in Hudson, MA

Dental implants are titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. The implants are fused with the jawbone and act as a permanent anchor for a dental crown or, together with other implants, other prosthesis. A dental crown is a permanent cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth or, as in this case, functions as the visible and functional portion of the tooth. If there’s enough healthy jawbone to anchor the dental implant, the crown can be cemented onto the implant post. This creates a natural-looking restoration that is permanently attached.

At Restoration Smiles: Adult & Pediatric Dentistry, we offer implant-supported dentures as a good option for patients missing all their teeth on the top or bottom jaw. For patients with only one or two teeth missing in different mouth areas, we offer implant-supported crowns. These permanent solutions will not require removals like dentures, partial bridges, or traditional bridges.

The Benefits of Implant-Supported Restorations

Traditional crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth, which limits their stability and durability. Although traditional restorations can last a long time, they may need to be replaced after several years or even months after they are placed. In contrast, implant-supported restorations are supported by dental implants instead of natural teeth.

Implant-supported crowns are used to replace a single missing tooth. But for multiple missing teeth, an implant-supported bridge can replace multiple missing teeth in a row while an implant-supported full denture, like the All-on-4 system, can replace a whole arch of missing teeth. These restorations are supported by several strategically placed dental implants and are more stable than their traditional counterparts.

Because the restorations are firmly attached to the implants, they last for decades, if not a lifetime. In addition, implant-supported restorations are also more comfortable than their traditional counterparts because of the lack of cement rubbing against tooth roots.

Additionally, implant-supported restorations continue to stimulate and therefore preserve the jawbone, preventing the bone from shrinking. As a result, they enable patients to enjoy better facial contours and a more youthful appearance.

The Implant-Supported Restoration Procedure

First, our dentists will use a unique scanning wand to capture a 3D scan of your teeth and the surrounding area, enabling the lab to fabricate a custom-fit crown or prosthesis. Then, they will numb the area and carefully remove any damaged tooth structures. Then they will cut into the gums, drill a small hole in the jaw, and insert the implant post. They will then attach a temporary restoration. Once everything is in place, you will return to our office in about eight weeks for your final restoration. This usually involves replacing the temporary with your new permanent crown.

After the procedure, you will most likely experience some tenderness in the area for a few days as your gums heal. You can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter medication.
